Understanding words but not using them

Expressive Language Delay

Children pick up words and ideas from the people where they are surrounded by. Actions, words, gestures, and even emotions are observed and imitated. During the early stage of communication development, they grasp the sounds and words from the world around them.

But some children struggle to find those words that they actually know or understand. This situation is commonly referred to as expressive language delay and it is actually curable.

Moments Where Parents Pause

In certain situations, parents pause to understand what the child is actually struggling with, such as:

  • When the child nods to the needs they wish for.
  • When the child points to the things they need without using words.
  • When the child is frustrated when their needs are delayed due to gestures.
  • When the child uses gestures as alternatives for words.

These are some situations where parents are stuck in between the sea, confused about how to support their child.

How Parents can Support their Child from Home

  • Interact and talk with them frequently:
  • Read them stories and play with them and emphasise the words they can easily sound.

  • Ask them questions
  • What is your name, what’s your mamma’s name, what’s your dadda’s name, these questions help communication and strengthen relationships.

  • Let them respond in their own time
  • Give them the space to reply and allow them the time to express it.

When to Consult Professional Support

Children are different. Some children develop their communication right from their home, by the support of parents or anyone they are close to, but some may develop more slowly and may need clinical support.

Remember early support is the best support. Consult a speech therapist and take the necessary steps accordingly.

Professional support helps:

  • Children develop their communication skills faster.
  • To learn the words and sentences easily.
  • To communicate more confidently.
